appeared on the market 50 years ago
 
We are always in the front line of research, which is really exciting", says Dr. Renate Viebahn Hänsler. With a chemical background (master’s diploma), she successfully directs Dr. J. Hänsler GmbH, the medical technical company which was founded by her father. And, over the last 30 years she has become a leading expert in the pharmacology of ozone.
Exactly 50 years ago, Joachim Hänsler introduced the first medical ozone generator to the market with the trade name Ozonosan; the name is still used for the latest equipment in the company’s product range.
„Nowadays, medical ozone application is considered to be a part of biological medicine,
i.e. complementary to conventional medicine", says Renate Viebahn Hänsler, who nevertheless would still like to see a greater scientific recognition for ozone therapy.
At present, the method is specially applied in pain therapy, for example in the case of slipped discs, or inflammatory vascular diseases, or in oncology. „Ozone therapy is able to help many cancer patients, making chemotherapy much easier for them, as it improves their oxygen supply and activates the immune system by enhancing the effect of radical scavengers at the cell level."
As ozone — the triatomic form of oxygen — is freshly generated at every application, and is immediately available, there are three different types of ozone generator: the clinical version, the table version for smaller practices, and the „boardcase" or portable version.
More than just a Company
Over the last 50 years, this relatively small company has worked its way up to become the market leader for medical ozone generators. The most important markets are Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Spain.
Since 1999, the number of units exported has rapidly increased and “is in the meantime at around 45 Prozent", reports Renate Viebahn-Hänsler, who continues to gain worldwide recognition for her company not only at congresses and trade fairs, but also by organizing training seminars/workshops and courses for physicians, dentists, practitioners and medical personnel. In fact, it was she who wrote the first standard handbook on ozone therapy recognized everywhere, and ensures that fundamental scientific literature and information on ozone therapy continues to spread. And she emphasizes that „ozone therapy ist at all times a complementary method".
 
On the 50th birthday of the first ozone generator, this active and enthusiastic scientist and businesswoman has widened the company’s management by making Stefan Höfele, the technical manager, a member of the board.
She also initiated the Ozone Project 2008 and has founded the Ozonosan Prize for Art: young artists from the Nürtingen University for Art Therapy participated in the exhibition with pictures and art objects on the subject of ozone to compete for the 2008 OZONOSAN Prize before a jury of experts consisting of recognized artists, including Bernd Wagenhoff, the Baden-Baden artist, who has created his three-part Paper Object “O3” for this particular purpose. The title of the exhibition is „Ozone in History and Art", which has just been opened in the company’s display rooms at Iffezheim. Apart from the creations of the young artists involved, other exhibits with posters, placards and information material show highlights in the company’s history as well as the history of ozone. Part Two of the ozone project will be held in the autumn with an international congress held under the title „Ozone in Medicine".
